India election results 2024 live: Shock for Modi as ruling BJP set to fall short of outright majority
Though the BJP is the incumbent party, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is quite popular; a surprising turn of events in the upcoming 2024 Indian general elections will lead the BJP to lose an absolute majority. Nevertheless, Modi has triumphantly declared victory for the NDA, which is likely to garner the necessary number of seats for the majority with the help of allies.
This projection to such an extent will be achieved in a situation when the BJP will be winning approximately around 300 electoral districts, although even less than the 303 districts it has clinched in 2019. As per preliminary analysis, the NDA is expected to have crossed the magical figure of 272 required to gain an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, which is India’s lower house of Parliament. This outcome is consistent with BCC’s assertion that Modi is set to come back into power again in 2019 as Prime Minister but would require the support of his coalition partners in order to have effective governance.
Thus, in an election that witnessed an average voter turnout of 70 percent, about 640 million voters cast their ballot. In the latest election, the BJP witnessed a change in some states showing slight improvement on the party’s part, however, the overall tally has come down to a large extent of roughly about 10 percent lower than the previous election. The Indian opposition Congress party under its president Rahul Gandhi has accepted the party’s failings but has expressed pride to the electorate for their vote turnout and resilience.
Modi went to the polls under the slogan ‘Ab Ki Baar Modi Sarkar’ that majorly became popular for highlighting national security and economic liberalization policies even amidst concerns of unemployment and farmer’s crises. The findings suggest that this support has remained consistent, although the strength is slightly lower, for Modi as the leader of India in the context of this study and for the BJP and its policies.
