hris Martin, the frontman of Coldplay, left fans puzzled during their headline set at Glastonbury Festival 2024. While Coldplay’s performance, which marked their record-breaking fifth headline slot, was generally well-received, viewers were taken aback by Martin’s seemingly American accent.

The band opened their set with “Yellow,” a hit from 2000, and followed with “Higher Power” from their 2021 album Music Of The Spheres. Later, Martin performed “Paradise” from their 2011 album Mylo Xyloto, joined by singer-songwriter Victoria Canal on piano. However, it was his interactions with the crowd at Worthy Farm in Somerset that sparked confusion on social media.

Several Twitter users commented on Martin’s accent, with @DC_THFC asking, “What’s wrong with Chris Martin’s accent?” and @Kevsafc22 questioning if Martin was attempting an American accent. @JamesKinsey noted that Martin lives in Malibu, California, which might explain the accent change.

Adding to the peculiarities of the night, Martin referred to Glastonbury as “the greatest city on earth,” prompting jokes and corrections from fans, since Glastonbury is actually a town. This mix-up led to comments like @REWearmouth’s, pointing out the blunder, and @HannahAMont’s joke about Martin granting Glastonbury city status. Despite these distractions, Coldplay’s performance remained a highlight of the festival.
